What sport did Niels Bohr play at a high level?

The story behind the answer

Niels Bohr played football at a high level. He was particularly associated with Akademisk Boldklub, a Copenhagen football club, and often played as a goalkeeper.

Football was a shared interest in the Bohr family. Niels played alongside his younger brother Harald, who later became a distinguished mathematician as well as an internationally recognized footballer. Harald represented Denmark at the 1908 Olympic tournament, while Niels did not play for the national team.

That distinction explains a common source of confusion. Niels Bohr was a passionate and capable football player, but stories sometimes mistakenly attribute Harald’s national-team and Olympic achievements to Niels. The brothers’ sporting background nevertheless formed an unusual contrast with their later academic careers.

Niels’s main scientific work developed while he studied physics at the University of Copenhagen. His interests ranged from experimental laboratory work to theoretical physics, and football remained part of his student life. The sport is therefore a genuine biographical detail, not a reference to his brother’s achievements alone.
