What spider family contains wolf spiders?

The story behind the answer

What spider family contains wolf spiders? Lycosidae. Wolf spiders are members of the family Lycosidae, a widespread group of mostly ground-dwelling hunting spiders. Rather than relying on capture webs, many lycosids actively chase prey or wait near shelters and pounce when an insect passes.

Their eyesight and body shape help distinguish them from several similar spiders. Two of their eight eyes are especially large and prominent, while their robust bodies and earth-toned coloring often provide camouflage. Wolf spiders usually live alone, although females show striking maternal behavior: they carry their egg sac attached to their spinnerets, and newly hatched spiderlings may ride on the mother's abdomen.

Lycosidae contains many genera, including Hogna, Lycosa, Schizocosa, and Alopecosa. Species occupy habitats from coastal areas and grasslands to forests, deserts, and mountains. Some dig silk-lined burrows; others shelter beneath stones, vegetation, or natural debris.

Wolf spiders are often confused with tarantulas because both can be hairy and ground-dwelling. The confusion also has a historical twist: the original “tarantula” was Lycosa tarantula, a Mediterranean wolf spider. In modern English, however, “tarantula” normally refers to members of Theraphosidae, not Lycosidae.
