Chambelán is the traditional Spanish word for a male escort in a quinceañera court.
A chambelán may accompany the quinceañera during the entrance, formal presentation, and choreographed dances. Depending on local usage, he may be a relative, friend, or selected partner. The role is ceremonial rather than a universal requirement.
The word is sometimes translated as “chamberlain,” although that English historical title does not fully describe its modern quinceañera meaning. A group of male attendants may be called chambelanes, while female attendants are often called damas.
Contemporary celebrations frequently change the court’s size or composition. Some quinceañeras have mixed-gender courts, a single escort, or no court at all, so the traditional vocabulary describes a custom rather than a rule followed by every family.
