Quinceañero is the Spanish word commonly used for the male version of a quinceañera celebration.
The word is the masculine form of quinceañera and is built from quince, “fifteen,” with a masculine ending. It can identify both the male honoree and, depending on context, his fifteenth-birthday celebration. Usage is less widespread and less standardized than quinceañera, because the traditional custom has historically centered on girls.
A quinceañero celebration may borrow familiar elements such as formal attire, a court, family dances, music, and a reception. The exact program depends on local culture and the family’s choices rather than a single universal rule.
Quinceañero is not the same as chambelán. The former is the person celebrating his fifteenth birthday; the latter is generally a male attendant or escort in a court. Spanish-speaking communities may also use descriptive phrases instead of a single fixed label.
