Quinceañera is the Spanish term for a girl celebrating her fifteenth birthday and for the celebration itself.
The word is related to quince, meaning 15, and describes the female celebrant in traditional Spanish usage. English speakers also use it as the name of the party, so the same word can identify both the person and the event depending on context.
The celebration’s structure differs widely. A family may organize a religious service, a formal entrance, a court, symbolic presentations, a meal, music, and dancing, but none of those elements is required in every community. Modern families often combine regional customs with personal choices.
Quinceañera should not be confused with madrina, which commonly refers to a female sponsor or godmother, or with dama, a female member of a court. Those terms describe participants or roles, not the central celebrant.
