Chambelán describes the quinceañera’s formal male escort or attendant in many traditions.
A chambelán may accompany the quinceañera during the entrance, dance with her during the vals, and appear with her in formal photographs. Depending on the celebration, he may be a friend, sibling, cousin, or another person chosen by the family. Some quinceañeras have one principal escort, while others have a larger group of chambelanes.
The word is related to the older European title chambellan, meaning chamberlain. In contemporary Latin American and Latino usage, however, it refers specifically to a ceremonial attendant connected with a quinceañera court.
The role is not universal. Many modern celebrations change the traditional court, include multiple kinds of attendants, or omit formal escorts entirely. Chambelán should also be distinguished from padrino, an adult sponsor who may help with expenses or ceremonial support, and dama, a female court attendant.
