A male ceremonial attendant at a quinceañera may be called a chambelán.
The chambelán can participate in the formal court, accompany the quinceañera during dances, or help with the event’s ceremonial presentation. The exact role and spelling vary across Spanish-speaking regions. In English-language celebrations, the attendant may simply be called an escort or court member.
A quinceañera’s court may also include damas, or female attendants. Some traditional formats use a matched group of attendants, while contemporary families may choose a smaller court, a mixed group of friends, relatives, or no court at all.
Chambelán should not be confused with padrino. A padrino is a sponsor or godparent-like supporter who may contribute money, objects, or assistance, whereas a chambelán is generally part of the ceremonial party. Regional vocabulary makes it important to consider local usage when describing the role.
