Quinceañera is the Spanish word commonly used for both the honoree and her fifteenth-birthday celebration.
The term is derived from quince, meaning 15, and the feminine form associated with a young woman. In English-language usage, quinceañera can describe the girl herself, the formal party, or the broader rite of passage.
Terminology is not identical everywhere. Quince años, literally “fifteen years,” is also widely used for the celebration, particularly in some Spanish-speaking countries. Regional vocabulary reflects the diversity of the custom rather than a disagreement about its purpose.
The celebration can include a Mass or other religious observance, a court of attendants, a formal entrance, dancing, and a reception. Families choose which elements to include, making the word broader than any one fixed ceremony.
