What Spanish word commonly names a quinceañera’s female attendants?

The story behind the answer

A quinceañera’s female attendants are commonly called damas.

Damas is the plural of dama, the Spanish word for “lady.” In a traditional court, the damas accompany the quinceañera during formal entrances, photographs, choreographed dances, or other ceremonial moments. The court may also include male attendants, commonly called chambelanes.

The size and organization of a court vary greatly. Some families choose a large group of relatives and friends, while others have only a few attendants or none at all. Modern celebrations may also use mixed-gender groups or replace a formal court with friends participating informally. Damas should not be confused with madrinas, who are sponsors or adult supporters associated with particular parts of the celebration.
