The traditional Spanish title for a male escort in a quinceañera court is chambelán.
The plural is chambelanes. A chambelán may accompany the quinceañera during a formal entrance, presentation, photographs, or a choreographed performance. In some communities, the term may be replaced by regional alternatives such as escort or chamberlain in English-language descriptions.
A chambelán is not the same as a padrino. Padrino means godfather or male sponsor and describes an adult support role in many Hispanic celebrations. The chambelán is generally a member of the honoree’s youthful court.
Practice varies widely. Some quinceañeras have several chambelanes, some have a mixed court, and some avoid traditional court titles altogether. These variations do not change the core meaning of quinceañera as a fifteenth-birthday coming-of-age celebration.
