The Spanish title commonly used for the young woman being honored is quinceañera.
The same word is used for the celebrant and, by extension, for the event itself. In English-language communities, people may say “her quinceañera” to mean the party, while “the quinceañera” can also mean the girl whose fifteenth birthday is being celebrated.
The masculine counterpart quinceañero is used in some contexts for a boy’s fifteenth-birthday celebration, although quinceañera remains the much more widely recognized term. Usage can vary across Spanish-speaking regions.
Quinceañera should not be confused with dama, which commonly means a female member of the celebrant’s court, or chambelán, which commonly refers to a male escort or court member.
