The girl being honored at a quinceañera is called the quinceañera.
The same word is also widely used for the celebration marking her fifteenth birthday. It comes from quince, meaning “fifteen,” with a feminine ending. In English-language communities, quinceañera can therefore describe both the young woman and the event, although context usually makes the meaning clear.
The word is distinct from terms for members of the court. A dama is traditionally a female attendant, while a chambelán is traditionally a male attendant or escort. A madrina is a sponsor or godmother-like supporter, not the honoree herself.
Usage varies by region. Some Spanish speakers also use quince años or fiesta de quince años for the celebration. These expressions refer to the event rather than specifically identifying the birthday girl.
