Chambelán traditionally names a male attendant or escort in a quinceañera’s formal court.
A chambelán may accompany the quinceañera during the event’s presentation or choreographed dances. The word is especially associated with formal court arrangements in which the celebrant is joined by attendants. The number of chambelanes and their exact duties vary widely.
The role should not be confused with padrino. A padrino is a male sponsor or godfather, while a chambelán is generally an attendant or escort. Female attendants are often called damas. These terms describe different positions even when one person’s family or social role overlaps with another.
Modern celebrations frequently adapt the traditional court. Some include mixed-gender attendants, a smaller group, or no formal court. Consequently, chambelán is a customary term rather than a universal requirement for every quinceañera.
