A quinceañera’s male escort or dance partner is traditionally called a chambelán.
The word comes from the Spanish term for a gentleman-in-waiting or chamberlain. In quinceañera customs, a chambelán may be part of the celebrant’s court and may perform a choreographed dance with her during the reception. The plural form is chambelanes.
A quinceañera court commonly includes chambelanes and damas, the corresponding female attendants. Usage varies by country and family: some celebrations have a full court, while others have only one escort or no formal attendants. Chambelán should not be confused with padrino, which means godfather or sponsor, or with the celebrant’s male counterpart, quinceañero.
