Quinceañero is a Spanish term commonly used for a boy’s comparable fifteenth-birthday celebration.
The masculine form parallels quinceañera, which traditionally identifies a female celebrant. In communities that hold a similar event for boys, quinceañero can describe the boy or the celebration, depending on regional usage. The format may include formal clothing, family members, music, dancing, and a religious or ceremonial component.
Usage is not uniform across the Spanish-speaking world. Some families use quinceañera as a broad name for the tradition regardless of gender, while others use local expressions such as fiesta de quince años. A boy’s celebration may also be designed differently rather than simply copying the traditional girl’s format.
The term should not be confused with chambelán, which traditionally refers to a male attendant or escort in a quinceañera court. Quinceañero identifies the fifteenth-birthday celebrant or event, not a member of the court.
