Chambelán is the Spanish term for a young man who traditionally escorts a quinceañera.
A chambelán may be part of the formal group that accompanies the celebrant during her entrance, presentation, and choreographed dance. The word is often translated as “chamberlain” or “escort,” though its practical meaning in a quinceañera depends on local custom.
A quinceañera may have one escort or several, and the group can include relatives and friends. Modern celebrations may also use mixed-gender groups or abandon formal escorts entirely. The event’s participants are chosen by the family and celebrant, not by a universal rule.
Chambelán should not be confused with padrino. A padrino is a sponsor or ceremonial supporter, while a chambelán’s role is primarily connected with escorting and performance. Regional terminology can differ as well.
