Chambelanes is the Spanish term commonly used for the male dance partners in a traditional quinceañera court.
A quinceañera court may accompany the honoree during the entrance, formal dances, photographs, and other parts of the celebration. The young women in the court are commonly called damas, while the male members are called chambelanes. The number and composition of the court vary according to family preference and local custom.
Chambelanes should not be confused with padrinos, who are sponsors or godparents, or with quinceañero, which can refer to a male celebrant or a boy celebrating a fifteenth birthday. The court is also not a mandatory religious component. In contemporary celebrations, some families use mixed-gender courts, smaller groups, or no court at all, but the term remains strongly associated with the traditional formal presentation and choreographed dances.
