The Spanish term quinceañera describes the formal fifteenth-birthday celebration itself.
The same word is also commonly used for the girl or young woman being honored. This double use can be understood from context: a sentence may refer to the quinceañera as an event, or to the quinceañera as the celebrant. English-language usage often follows the same pattern.
The word comes from quince años, “fifteen years,” and is associated especially with Latin American and Latino communities. The celebration can include religious, family, ceremonial, and entertainment elements, but no single program applies everywhere.
Quinceañera is distinct from bautismo, the Spanish word for baptism; boda, meaning wedding; and graduación, meaning graduation. Those events may occur during a person’s life and can share formal clothing or family gatherings, but they mark different occasions.
