Quinceañero is the Spanish term commonly used for a male celebrating a quinceañera-style fifteenth birthday.
The word is the masculine counterpart of quinceañera, which traditionally refers to the female honoree and, by extension, the celebration itself. Both terms derive from quince, meaning fifteen. The suffix changes with grammatical gender in Spanish.
Male fifteenth-birthday celebrations have become more visible in Latin American communities and in the diaspora. Their customs may include formal clothing, a court, dancing, a religious service, or a reception, but families do not follow one universal script. Some simply call the event a quince años celebration.
“Quinceañero” can also refer to the young man rather than the party. It should not be confused with chambelán, which identifies a male member of the honoree’s court.
