Madrinas can describe a quinceañera’s godmothers or female sponsors.
The Spanish word madrina means “godmother” or “female sponsor.” In quinceañera planning, madrinas may be relatives, family friends, or other trusted adults who help support the celebration. They can contribute items, services, or financial assistance, depending on the family’s custom.
Madrinas should not be confused with damas. Damas are female attendants in the court, while madrinas are sponsors or honored adult supporters. A family may use both roles at the same event, and some celebrations also identify male sponsors as padrinos.
There is no universal list of required sponsors or gifts. Practices differ by country, parish, and family. The terms are therefore best understood as customary relationship labels rather than fixed official positions.
