Quinceañero is a Spanish term that can describe a boy celebrating his own fifteenth birthday.
Quinceañera is the feminine form traditionally associated with girls, while quinceañero is the masculine form. In practice, terminology and customs vary considerably among countries, families, and Spanish-speaking communities. Some boys have celebrations modeled on quinceañeras, while others have a less formal birthday event.
The term should not be confused with chambelán, which traditionally identifies a male member of a quinceañera’s court. A quinceañero is the birthday honoree; a chambelán is an attendant. Those roles are different even though both words may appear in descriptions of the same celebration.
Contemporary quinceañera traditions are flexible. Families may adapt the event for a boy, celebrate a gender-neutral fifteenth birthday, or use local names for the ceremony. The underlying milestone remains the fifteenth birthday.
