The Spanish dance traditionally performed during a quinceañera’s formal celebration is the vals.
Vals is the Spanish word for waltz, a partnered dance in triple meter. A formal quinceañera program often includes a choreographed waltz by the honoree and members of her court. The performance may be rehearsed for weeks and presented after the honoree’s entrance or other ceremonial moments.
The exact music is not fixed. Families may select a classical waltz, a Spanish-language song, a popular ballad, or a modern arrangement with waltz-like movement. Some celebrations add a second, faster dance segment, sometimes called a surprise dance.
A quinceañera vals should not be confused with tango, salsa, or flamenco. Those are distinct dance traditions, although contemporary celebrations may include them as additional entertainment.
