What song is traditionally played at midnight during New Year's Eve in Austria?

The story behind the answer

The Blue Danube is traditionally played at midnight during New Year's Eve in Austria.

Johann Strauss II composed the waltz officially titled An der schönen blauen Donau, usually translated as The Blue Danube. In Austria, radio and television stations commonly broadcast it at midnight as part of the transition into the new year, and people may dance or waltz along.

The piece was first performed in 1867 and became one of Strauss's best-known compositions. Its association with New Year's celebrations is separate from the Vienna New Year's Concert, which takes place on the morning of 1 January rather than at midnight on New Year's Eve.

The Radetzky March is also strongly linked with the Vienna New Year's Concert, especially its audience-participation finale. That connection can cause confusion, but the midnight New Year's Eve tradition points to The Blue Danube.
