At the end of the 2014 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Michelangelo sings “Happy Together” to April. The scene takes place after the Turtles have helped stop the threat in New York and are leaving in their modified vehicle. Michelangelo hangs back to serenade April, while his brothers react with embarrassment and annoyance.
“Happy Together” was originally recorded by the American rock band the Turtles. Released in 1967, it became the group’s signature hit and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its bright, romantic tone makes the song an intentionally comic choice for Michelangelo’s flirtatious farewell.
A common mix-up is confusing the song with the title of the 2014 movie or assuming it was written specifically for the film. It was a decades-old pop song reused in the closing sequence. The band’s name also creates a joke: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles perform a song by the Turtles, even though the fictional sewer-dwelling heroes are not musicians in the ordinary sense.
