The Gaboon viper, Bitis gabonica, is a large African viper found in rainforests, savannas, and nearby woodland across parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Its hinged solenoglyphous fangs can reach about 5.5 centimetres, or roughly 2 inches, making them the longest fangs of any venomous snake.

Those enormous fangs are part of an unusually effective venom-delivery system. The Gaboon viper also has exceptionally large venom glands and can inject a substantial quantity of venom. Its camouflage—brown, cream, and yellow patterns resembling dead leaves—helps it remain hidden while waiting to ambush prey.

A common mix-up is confusing longest fangs with longest snake. The Gaboon viper is not the longest snake; that distinction belongs to species such as the reticulated python.
