A doll may symbolize a quinceañera’s departure from childhood during the traditional ceremony.
The presentation of the last doll, or muñeca, is a well-known quinceañera custom. The doll represents the childhood that the celebrant is symbolically leaving behind as she enters a new stage of life. Depending on the family, a parent, godparent, or another honored person gives the doll during the celebration.
The custom is symbolic rather than a universal requirement. Some families use a doll dressed similarly to the quinceañera, while others omit the ritual or replace it with a different presentation. The meaning is usually explained through the contrast between a child’s toy and the responsibilities associated with adolescence and adulthood.
This tradition is sometimes confused with the changing-of-the-shoes ritual. In that separate custom, the celebrant’s flat shoes are replaced with high heels to symbolize growing maturity. Both rituals express transition, but the doll specifically points to childhood and its toys.
