What shortened race distance is standard for Top Fuel dragsters?

The story behind the answer

The standard race distance for modern Top Fuel dragsters is 1,000 feet.

Top Fuel cars are the quickest-accelerating category in sanctioned drag racing, so the shorter course helps manage extreme speed and stopping demands. They no longer generally run the traditional quarter-mile distance of 1,320 feet in major competition.

The National Hot Rod Association introduced the 1,000-foot format for Top Fuel in 2008 after the fatal 2008 qualifying crash of Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The change was intended to reduce speeds and improve safety near the end of the run.

The shorter distance does not make Top Fuel slow: dragsters can exceed 300 mph and reach extraordinary speeds before the finish line. The distance is also not the same as an eighth-mile, which is 660 feet. A 1,000-foot Top Fuel run sits between the eighth-mile and the traditional quarter-mile, and elapsed times from different distances should not be compared directly.
