What service is commonly held for a quinceañera in Catholic communities?

The story behind the answer

A Misa de Acción de Gracias, or thanksgiving Mass, is commonly held for a quinceañera in Catholic communities.

The service gives the honoree and her family an opportunity to express gratitude and ask for blessings as she reaches an important stage of life. It may take place in a church before the reception, although exact arrangements differ by parish, country, and family.

The Spanish phrase literally means “Mass of Thanksgiving.” It should not be confused with a sacrament such as Confirmation or with a wedding ceremony. A quinceañera is a cultural and family celebration, not a sacrament of the Catholic Church, even when it includes a Catholic Mass.

Some families hold a religious service, while others choose a civil or entirely secular event. The church service is especially associated with Catholic traditions in Mexico, the United States, and other parts of Latin America.
