What self-propelled vehicle did Leonardo da Vinci design using springs and gear mechanisms?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a self-propelled cart using springs and gear mechanisms.

The cart was probably created around 1478 to 1480, making it one of the earliest known concepts for a vehicle that could move without being pushed or pulled by an animal. Its power came from coiled springs hidden inside drums. Gears transferred the stored energy to the wheels, while a steering mechanism could set the cart’s direction.

The design may have been intended for theatrical performances or court spectacles rather than transportation. Leonardo’s drawings show a compact three-wheeled vehicle, and the mechanism could be programmed to travel along a preset path. It did not have an engine, accelerator, or steering system like a modern automobile. In 2006, the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence built a working replica, demonstrating that the mechanism could operate when reconstructed from the drawings.
