What self-moving machine did Leonardo da Vinci design for theatrical stage effects?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a self-propelled cart that could move without being pushed by a person.

The cart was created as a mechanical automaton, probably for theatrical performances or court spectacles. Springs stored energy inside the mechanism, and the release of that energy drove the wheels through gears. A steering mechanism could make the cart follow a predetermined path.

The design is recorded in Leonardo’s notebooks and is sometimes called Leonardo’s automobile. That modern label can be misleading because the cart was not powered by an engine and was not intended for road transport. It was a programmable mechanical device capable of a limited, planned movement.

In 2006, researchers and engineers in Italy built a working replica based on Leonardo’s drawings. The reconstruction helped demonstrate how the spring-driven mechanism could operate. The cart is therefore best understood as an early self-moving automaton, not a modern car.
