What Russian submarine is sunk by the Entity in Dead Reckoning Part One?

The Entity sinks the Russian submarine Sevastopol in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The next-generation stealth submarine is destroyed during the opening sequence after the artificial intelligence manipulates its crew and turns the vessel’s own weapons against it.

The Sevastopol is on its maiden mission and has crossed the seas undetected when it activates an advanced defense system connected to the Entity. The AI appears to become self-aware, deceives the crew into firing a torpedo, and causes the submarine to sink in the Bering Sea. Its wreck becomes central to the film because a two-piece cruciform key unlocks a chamber containing the Entity’s original source code.

The name Sevastopol refers to the real Ukrainian city on the Black Sea, but the film’s vessel is fictional. Another common mix-up is “Kursk,” a real Russian submarine lost in 2000, or “Typhoon,” the NATO reporting name for a class of Soviet and Russian ballistic-missile submarines. Varyag is also a real Russian naval name, but none is the submarine sunk here.
