What royal title did Charlemagne hold from 768?

The story behind the answer

Charlemagne held the royal title King of the Franks from 768. He inherited the throne after the death of his father, Pepin the Short, and initially ruled jointly with his younger brother, Carloman I.

The brothers were crowned separately on 9 October 768: Charlemagne at Noyon and Carloman at Soissons. Their division of authority reflected Frankish succession customs, although Charlemagne became sole ruler when Carloman died in 771. He then consolidated the Frankish kingdom and greatly expanded it through campaigns in Saxony, Italy, Bavaria, and elsewhere.

A common mix-up is to identify Charlemagne only as an emperor. Pope Leo III crowned him Emperor of the Romans in Rome on Christmas Day 800, but that was a later title. He remained King of the Franks throughout his reign, and he also became King of the Lombards after conquering their kingdom in 774.
