What royal parade device did Leonardo da Vinci design as a mechanical lion?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical lion for royal ceremony and spectacle.

The device was reportedly created for a French royal event in 1515, when Leonardo was living in France under the patronage of King Francis I. Contemporary and later accounts say that the lion could move forward and open its chest, revealing lilies or fleurs-de-lis, symbols associated with the French monarchy.

The machine belonged to the Renaissance tradition of automata, in which hidden gears, cams, springs, and linkages produced lifelike movement. Such devices were intended to impress audiences as much as to solve a practical problem.

The exact construction details are uncertain because no complete original mechanism survives. A modern reconstruction by the Italian artist Renzo Frau was presented in 2009, based on historical descriptions and Leonardo’s engineering methods. The mechanical lion is therefore best understood as a ceremonial automaton, not a practical robot or animal substitute.
