What robot-like figure did Leonardo da Vinci design for a 1495 Milan court pageant?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robotic knight for a Milanese court pageant around 1495.

The machine was a humanoid suit of armor containing a system of pulleys, cables, and levers. Leonardo’s design could apparently sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and visor. The mechanism translated the motion of a human operator into movement of the armored figure.

The robot is associated with a celebration organized for Ludovico Sforza, Leonardo’s patron in Milan. It was probably intended as an impressive theatrical automaton rather than as an autonomous robot in the modern sense. Leonardo’s surviving notes do not provide a complete construction record, so details of the original performance remain uncertain.

In 2002, engineer Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s drawings. The reconstruction helped demonstrate that the proposed joints and cables could produce the advertised movements. The famous figure should therefore be understood as an early mechanical automaton, not an artificial intelligence system.
