Hope remains inside Pandora’s jar after the evils escape.
In Hesiod’s account, Pandora shuts the vessel before Hope leaves it. This ending has generated centuries of debate because the story does not plainly state whether Hope is preserved for humanity or withheld from it. The Greek term is elpis, a word that can involve expectation as well as hope.
Many modern retellings treat the scene as an optimistic explanation: even after suffering enters the world, hope remains available. Other interpretations note that Hope is enclosed rather than released, suggesting a more ambiguous or even darker conclusion.
The familiar phrase “hope remains” is therefore accurate as a plot detail, but its moral meaning is not completely fixed. Readers should distinguish the event in the story from later philosophical interpretations of what it symbolizes.
