Catholicism most commonly shapes a quinceañera’s optional thanksgiving Mass.
The religious service is known as a Misa de acción de gracias, or thanksgiving Mass. During it, the celebrant may give thanks, receive a blessing, and participate in prayers with family and friends. The service is often held before the reception.
Catholic influence reflects the history of Spanish colonization and the large Catholic population in many Latin American countries. Even so, a quinceañera is not automatically a Catholic sacrament, and the Mass is not required for every celebration.
Families from other Christian traditions, other religions, or no religious tradition may adapt the event. The reception and family rituals can also take place independently of a church service.
