What religious service traditionally begins many quinceañera celebrations?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic Mass traditionally begins many quinceañera celebrations.

This religious service is often called a quinceañera Mass or a misa de acción de gracias, meaning “thanksgiving Mass.” During it, the honoree gives thanks for her life and asks for continued guidance as she enters a new stage.

The Mass is not required for every quinceañera. Families may celebrate with a civil ceremony, a secular program, or only a reception, especially when their religious traditions differ. The religious portion is most closely associated with Catholic communities in Latin America and the United States.

The reception usually follows the church service. It may include a formal entrance, a waltz, speeches, dinner, cake, and dancing. A quinceañera therefore combines a birthday celebration with family, cultural, and—in many cases—religious elements.
