What religious service often opens a traditional quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

A traditional quinceañera often opens with a Catholic Mass, sometimes called a Misa de Acción de Gracias or Thanksgiving Mass.

The service gives the family an opportunity to express gratitude and ask for blessings as the celebrant reaches fifteen. Depending on local practice, the quinceañera may make promises about faith and conduct, receive a special blessing, and participate in a formal procession with family members or attendants.

The Mass is not universal. Many quinceañeras are secular, and some families celebrate with another Christian service or a nonreligious ceremony. The religious element is especially common in communities with strong Catholic traditions, but the party’s precise structure varies widely.

A quinceañera is therefore not a sacrament equivalent to baptism or marriage. It is a cultural celebration that may include Catholic worship, rather than a sacrament required by Catholic doctrine.
