What religious service may traditionally begin a Catholic quinceañera celebration?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic quinceañera celebration may traditionally begin with a misa de acción de gracias, or Mass of thanksgiving.

The service gives the family an opportunity to express gratitude for the young person’s life and to ask for guidance as she enters a new stage. Depending on the parish and local custom, the celebrant may participate in a procession, receive a blessing, make promises, or be presented to the congregation. Practices are not identical everywhere.

The Spanish phrase literally refers to a Mass of thanksgiving. It is not the same sacrament as baptism, confirmation, or marriage. A quinceañera is also not itself a sacrament of the Catholic Church. The religious service is a devotional custom that may accompany the birthday celebration.

Many quinceañeras are secular, and some families hold a nonreligious ceremony or only a reception. Requirements for a church service, such as preparation classes or parish membership, can differ by location. The reception may follow the Mass with food, music, speeches, and traditional dances.
