What religious service may precede a traditional quinceañera party?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic Mass may precede a traditional quinceañera party.

In families that observe the religious form, the young woman attends a special Mass, often called a Misa de quince años or quinceañera Mass. The service may include prayers, blessings, readings, and participation by family members and sponsors. A reception or dance commonly follows.

The religious service reflects the strong historical connection between quinceañera customs and Catholic communities in Latin America. However, a Mass is not required for every quinceañera. Many modern families hold a civil ceremony, a nonreligious presentation, or only a reception.

A quinceañera Mass should not be confused with a sacrament. The celebration is not one of the Catholic Church's seven sacraments, although it may take place in a church and include a priest's blessing.
