What religious service may precede a quinceañera in Catholic families?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic quinceañera may begin with a Mass, often called a quinceañera Mass or a thanksgiving Mass. The service gives the family an opportunity to offer thanks and prayers for the celebrant.

The religious portion is not universal. Quinceañeras are cultural celebrations practiced by families with different religious backgrounds, and some families hold only a reception or another non-Catholic ceremony. Even among Catholic families, local customs and parish requirements can differ.

The Mass is distinct from a baptism, which is a Christian rite associated with initiation into the church. A quinceañera Mass does not itself make someone Catholic or confer a new legal status. It is a religious observance connected with the birthday milestone.

After the service, families may continue with a reception featuring food, music, speeches, symbolic gifts, and dancing. The order can vary, but a church service followed by a formal celebration is a familiar pattern in many communities.
