What religious service may open a traditional quinceañera celebration?

The story behind the answer

A traditional quinceañera may open with a misa de acción de gracias, or Thanksgiving Mass.

This Catholic service gives the family an opportunity to express gratitude and seek a blessing as the celebrant reaches 15. In descriptions of the traditional ceremony, the Mass is followed by a reception or fiesta, although contemporary families may alter the order or omit the religious service.

The Mass is not required for every quinceañera. The celebration is practiced by people with varied religious commitments, and many families emphasize the social and cultural event instead. Some celebrations therefore include a church service, while others take place entirely at a private venue.

The phrase is often translated as “Mass of thanksgiving.” It should not be confused with a wedding Mass: a quinceañera is a coming-of-age tradition, not a marriage ceremony.
