What religious service is often included in a Catholic quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic quinceañera often includes a Mass, sometimes called a thanksgiving Mass.

The service gives the family an opportunity to express gratitude for the celebrant's life and to ask for guidance and blessings for the years ahead. It is commonly held before the reception, although arrangements differ between parishes and families.

A quinceañera Mass is not one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. That distinction is important: the celebration may take place in a church and contain prayers or a blessing, but reaching age 15 does not create a new sacrament.

Participation is not limited to one universal format. Some families hold a church service, some choose a simpler parish blessing, and others celebrate entirely outside a religious setting. The word quinceañera therefore describes a cultural milestone, while the Mass is an optional religious component shaped by the family's Catholic practice.
