A Catholic quinceañera commonly begins with a Mass before the reception.
This service is often called a quinceañera Mass or a thanksgiving Mass. The honoree and her family may offer prayers of gratitude and ask for guidance and blessings as she enters a new stage of life. The service can take place in a parish church before the party.
The religious portion is especially associated with Catholic families, but a quinceañera is not itself a sacrament. It does not replace baptism, confirmation, or another sacramental rite. Churches and families may set different requirements for participation.
Many celebrations are entirely secular, and some include a non-Catholic service or family blessing. The word Mass is therefore the canonical answer for the traditional Catholic setting, not a claim that every quinceañera follows the same religious format.
