What religious service is commonly held as part of a Catholic quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic quinceañera commonly includes a Mass, often called a thanksgiving Mass.

In many families, the religious service is held before the reception and gives the celebration a formal spiritual setting. The celebrant may receive a blessing, participate in prayers, and be accompanied by relatives and attendants. The precise order and content depend on the parish, country, and family’s religious practice.

This service is not universal. Quinceañeras can be secular, and even Catholic families may adapt the celebration without a Mass. A quinceañera is also not one of the Catholic Church’s seven sacraments. That distinction separates it from Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Matrimony, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders.

A Mass can therefore be an important traditional component without defining every quinceañera. In communities where the religious service is included, it often links the birthday milestone with gratitude, family support, and hopes for the celebrant’s future.
