Mass commonly takes place before a traditional quinceañera celebration.
In Catholic families, the religious service is often called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, or thanksgiving Mass. The quinceañera and her family attend church, where the celebrant gives thanks for her life and asks for guidance as she enters a new stage of maturity. The service may include special prayers, readings, music, and a blessing.
The Mass is separate from the reception that follows. After church, guests may travel to a banquet hall, home, or other venue for food, speeches, dancing, and ceremonial traditions. Some celebrations also include a court of honor and a formal presentation of the quinceañera.
Quinceañeras are not limited to one denomination or one religious practice. Families may hold a nonreligious ceremony, use another Christian service, or celebrate only with a reception. “Mass” is the traditional Catholic answer because the custom is especially associated with Catholic communities in Latin America and the United States.
