A Catholic quinceañera celebration is commonly preceded by Mass.
This service is often called a quinceañera Mass or a thanksgiving Mass. The celebrant and her family may attend a Catholic service before the reception, where she gives thanks and receives a blessing for the next stage of life.
The Mass is not required for every quinceañera. Some families hold a secular celebration, choose another Christian service, or combine religious and cultural elements differently. The reception, with food, music, dancing, and speeches, normally follows as a separate social event.
The custom reflects the strong Catholic influence on quinceañera traditions in Mexico and many parts of Latin America. It does not mean that every quinceañera is Catholic or that the party itself is a sacrament. A quinceañera is a cultural celebration, not a sacrament of the Catholic Church.
