Roman Catholicism most strongly shaped the traditional church ceremony associated with a quinceañera.
Many traditional celebrations include a Catholic Mass or a blessing in which the young woman gives thanks, receives prayers, and is presented before the congregation. Catholic symbolism helped establish the formal religious dimension of the event in many Latin American communities.
The cultural celebration is not identical to a sacrament. A quinceañera ceremony does not itself confer a sacrament or make the celebrant a member of the Church. Families may also hold a secular celebration or adapt the religious portion.
Practice differs by country, parish, and family. Some celebrations include a church service, while others focus entirely on the reception and family rituals.
