Catholicism is the religious denomination most closely associated with a traditional quinceañera Mass.
Many quinceañeras include a Catholic thanksgiving service, often called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, before the reception. The celebrant may receive a blessing, present flowers, and participate in prayers with family and sponsors. The church service gives the birthday celebration a formal religious dimension.
A quinceañera is not limited to Catholics, however. Families from other Christian traditions may adapt the ceremony, and some celebrations are entirely secular. The Catholic association reflects the historical importance of Spanish and Latin American Catholic communities, not a rule that every person celebrating a fifteenth birthday must belong to the Catholic Church.
