A traditional Catholic quinceañera is often accompanied by a Mass.
The religious service is commonly called a quinceañera Mass or Misa de acción de gracias, meaning a Mass of thanksgiving. The celebrant may make commitments, receive a blessing, and participate in prayers with family and sponsors. The service is distinct from the reception, which usually includes food, music, dancing, and formal presentations.
The Catholic ceremony is not universal. Some families hold a secular celebration, a prayer service, or no religious service at all. Requirements can also differ among parishes, including preparation, sacramental status, and the involvement of parents or godparents.
A quinceañera Mass should not be confused with Confirmation. Confirmation is a separate Catholic sacrament with its own theology and preparation. Although some families coordinate the events or include similar symbols, the fifteenth-birthday celebration itself does not confer a sacrament or change a person’s formal religious status.
